NEWYORKCITY/1978-1998

My education at the feet of creative genius began in earnest when, age 20, I joined the cast of American Dance Machine during its original Broadway run in 1978. ADM existed to document — then perform — historic theater dances. We recreated and restaged key numbers with and for legendary choreographers like Agnes DeMille and Bob Fosse, or their proteges- Gwen Verdon, Ann Reinking. I worked two plus years for ADM, then with a series of other notable creators on original shows throughout the subsequent decade. Some made it. Others were history opening night. The Mystery of Edwin Drood, 1986 Tony-winning Best Musical, marked the end of my Broadway run. For its original cast I created a couple characters and performed alongside future two-time Tony-winning Best Actress, Donna Murphy, as well as renowned “Chicago” director, Rob Marshall.

NEWYORKCITY/1978-1998

THEATER: My education at the feet of creative genius began in earnest when, age 20, I joined the cast of American Dance Machine during its original Broadway run in 1978.

MUSIC: Persistent songwriting led me to New York’s downtown music scene in the early ’90s: I played Village clubs regularly- The Bitter End, CBGB. Both Geffen Records and Atlantic Records developed me as an artist. Though music makers too numerous to namedrop taught me, played with me, produced me, two in particular generously and patiently dispensed music-making wisdom that guides me still: John Leventhal, multi Grammy-winning producer, and Kip Winger, Classical Composer Grammy nominee and metal god.

FINE ART: Conceptual and video installation art I made with artist and MIT professor, Judith Barry, appeared in major shows in the Europe and the US, including the mid-decade survey Video Spaces: Eight Installations at MoMA (NYC, ’95). Hard©ell, our piece, addressed a fusillade of subjects, not least being rampant AI. Collaborating with Judith immersed me in — she immersed me in — contemporary art and criticism to a degree most post grads would die for.

WRITING: I created and developed programming for Viacom, Paramount and MTV, as well as Lorne Michael’s Broadway Video in the mid-nineties, guided by brilliant collaborators and former SNL producers. I wrote on an early web/TV “show” for Soho’s Sunshine Digital, and created The Library of Secrets for Paramount Digital, the studio’s first foray into web content. Meanwhile, with handholding from award-winning editor and best-selling author, Louise Sloan, I began writing arts and culture journalism, initially for shelter and service mags.
